England

Hey Everybody. I'm Margareth and I'm a Political Science Student. In this blog i'm gonna talk about England

ENGLAND BLOGSPOT #1

In this occasion we will talk about stereotypes towards England. Within the English culture there is a variety of habits and traditions, there is even a cultural difference by sectors, that is, in the northern part it is not the same culture of the southern part. However, there are some stereotypes that the rest of the world has of the people of England, for example, that they are not so emotional and inexpressive people. Also. People think they are tea fans and strive to have their tea time. In the same way, people think that they are all white skinned, tall with blonde hair, and finally, people think that their population is mostly made up of adults.

BLOGPOST #2 Gender Roles

Hello everyone, in this occasion I will talk about gender roles in both England and Colombia.

Gender roles have changed over time, as well as society. In England for the Second World War Women worked in factories and joined the armed forces to demonstrate to men the opportunity to fight against the Germans. therefore, this generated that as time passed women in the position of power were accepted. In Colombia, it has been shown that there is still a social and labor inequality between men and women, because machismo is still present, which forces women to be a housewife. However, feminist movements have driven this to change, and that there is no such stereotype that 1 is the only one to bring bread home.

HELLO MY DEAR PEOPLE, On this occasion we will talk a little bit about English culture versus Colombian culture based on Lewis's model. England is characterized by being Linear Active, because, they are usually very organized, structured people, planning for them is very important and they are not unpunctual and outgoing. On the other hand, Colombians are Multi - Active people, they are characterized by doing several tasks at the same time, they are also impulsive and very emotional.

My advice to all those English people who want to come to Colombia is that they must take into account the emotional burden that Colombians have, they are very emotional. Also keep in mind that Colombians are not punctual unlike them. The rest of things can be overcome with an open mind.

Hello, my dear readers. To continue highlighting and comparing my country Colombia with England, today I will base these comparisons on characteristics that I have detected in the different societies.

The first factor we will analyze is Power Distance, this refers to the extent to which the less powerful members of institutions and organizations within a country expect and accept that power is distributed unevenly. Colombia has a high score on this scale, which highlights that it is a society that is aware of inequalities but is accepted, in contrast, England, has the lowest average on the scale, which shows that it is a society that believes that inequalities between people should be minimized. The second factor to analyze is individualism, this dimension what it tries to show is the degree of interdependence that a society maintains among its members. Colombia is one of the least individualistic countries in the world, that is, it is very important for Colombians to belong to a group and align with the opinion of that group. On the contrary, England is considered one of the most individualistic countries in the world, that is to say that this society considers that the path to happiness is through personal fulfillment. The third factor that must be taken into account is mascunility versus femininity. Colombia, is a society considered with high rates of mascunility, since, Colombians are competitive in search of status, people seek membership in groups that grant them status and performance-related rewards. In the same way, England is considered a society with high mascunility, people in the United Kingdom live to work and have a clear ambition for performance. The fourth factor that we are going to analyze is the UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE.What demonstrates this dimension is The extent to which members of a culture feel threatened by ambiguous or unknown situations and have created beliefs and institutions that try to avoid them. In Colombia, the indices of this factor are very high, which means that it is a society that seeks mechanisms to reach a situation of insecurity. In England on the contrary, it has very low rates in this dimension, this means that they are a very optimistic society and are very happy to wake up without knowing what the day holds. The fifth factor to analyze is, LONG TERM ORIENTATION VS SHORT TERM ORIENTATION. In Colombia, in this case the search for obsolute truth is very important, which means that it is a very normative society. On the contrary in England, it is very difficult to determine this factor, since they are very neutral in this regard. In the sixth and final factor we will talk about INDULGENCE, this dimension what it shows is the extent to which people try to control their desires and impulses. Colombians in this category have a high index, we are very positive, they show a willingness to realize their impulses and desires regarding enjoying life and having fun. Like England, it is a society that gives a greater degree of importance to leisure time, they act at will and spend the money they want.In conclusion, these two societies have several factors that set them apart and make them similar, but both have a great sense of optimism and desire to live life

Hello my dear readers. On this occasion we will talk a little about the subcultures found in England. The first one we will talk about, is one of the most interesting for me, it is the SKINHEADS. originated in 1969, This subculture is characterized by having a worker aesthetic (boots and braces), as opposed to the peaceful attitude of the hippies. What unites skinheads is their taste for the same type of music and clothing, as well as for the violent resolution of conflicts.

The second English subculture that we will analyze are the Hooligans. The term hooligan is normally used in relation to football fans in Britain, who before, during and after some football matches have violent attitudes. They have a normally extremist and radical ideology and support their team with a spirit contrary to Fair Play. Normally the hooligans of a team usually look for a fight with the hooligans of the rival team and for this reason it could be said that these bands act as if they were on a battlefield.

The third group we will talk about is the Glam. They are a movement of the late 60s and early 70s, their aesthetics are effeminate and extravagant, flared pants, and exaggerated heel boots, striking colors, silver and gold, clothes with the most original and varied designs, tight clothing , bright futuristic costumes, platform boots, impossible hairstyles and kilos of makeup and glitter used exaggeratedly for both men and women, often long hair, is a fashion influenced by the transvestites of Andy Warhol. His musical icons, David Bowie, Mark Boland, T. Rex, Roxy Music, Slade, Gary Glitter, and more recently the Suede group.

The fourth and last subculture to analyze are the MODS. It originated in the late 1950s in London, and peaked between the early and mid-1960s, and its sophistication defined the youth revolt of that era. The significant elements of the "mod" movement included several aspects. For example, fashion, often custom made suits. Another important aspect was music, including the new jazz that was developing during the 50s, African American soul, Jamaican ska, part of British beat music, American rhythm and blues and their British variety or the sounds of bands from American and Canadian garage rock. Another common aspect was the passion for scooter motorcycles.

  1. I'm not a good example to get rid of this stereotype, but I assure you we are not all tall and blonde! Very cute drawing, they look like a happy couple :)

  2. Yes, the early 20th century was a big moment not only in the UK, but all of the world. You should check out the Suffragette movement, which was the push for women's right to vote. It took place in Manchester :)
